hey everyone! so i’m a reader (99% horror/thriller/mystery/suspense.. you get the idea) and i am always looking for recommendations. in case you are too, here are my thoughts on the books i have read since the beginning of 2025!
2025

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
this was the first freida mcfadden book i read. i had seen her books on booktok saying how amazing of a horror/psychological thriller author she is, and so i immediately became intrigued. i got the whole series for christmas from my gammy. this book got me out of a (very, very long) reading slump. the twist was something i did not see coming and i finally understood the whole “freida mcfadden jaw-drop moment” i had been seeing on tiktok. this book made me excited to start reading again.

The Housemaid’s Secret by Freida McFadden
i thought that the twist was interesting. the ending was kind of scattered all over the place for me, but my jaw definitely did drop. i think the most suspenseful part for me was when the main character was being stalked (more or less) and waiting to figure out who was in that damn car.
rating: 4/5 stars

The Housemaid’s Wedding by Freida McFadden
this was, truthfully, unnecessary to the series in my opinion. i’m not saying it wasn’t a good little story, but it didn’t add anything into the overall story for me. it was a cute little blurb to distract from the thriller aspect.
rating: 3/5 stars

The Housemaid Is Watching by Freida McFadden
this story was more suspenseful than the second book in the series, which made me happy. i did not see the twist coming at all, very much shocked and surprised. she has a way of making you think one thing is happening, and it is the exact opposite in the end. my only thing with this story though, is that it took a little long to really get into the good stuff.
rating: 4/5 stars

The Crash by Freida McFadden
this book gave me immense anxiety, not that i don’t already have that on the daily. anyways… i very much enjoyed this book. this book was more than just suspenseful for me because we actually got to see the thought process of one of the main characters and see her justify her actions. did that make it creepier? probably. the twist at the end was something i did not see coming at all, but it makes sense once you kind of go back and look at some of the foreshadowing.
rating: 4/5 stars

People Kill People by Ellen Hopkins
at first, i was kind of lost while reading it, just because of the viewpoint. i then realized that this story is told from the point of view of a gun. it was a very interesting book to say the least. i would highly recommend this book to, anybody honestly. i like how she put the viewpoint in relation to each of the main characters. while this wasn’t necessarily a thriller book, it was still very suspenseful and you were waiting for the other show to drop at any moment. it did. it very much did. i did not see the ending coming, at least in the way that it ended up happening.
rating: 4/5 stars

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak
i would just like to start off by saying… i read this book in 4 hours. my partner purchased this book for themself, and they aren’t a huge reader, so it took them almost a month to finish reading (and then i read it in 4 hours, maybe a couple minutes over). this was another book i had been seeing people rant and rave about on tiktok and facebook. it was a slow burn, and then around the middle it started to pick up. the pictures were creepy from the beginning though, which i appreciated. honestly, the pictures were the creepiest part of the story to me. i thought it was a good book, but i was honestly a little let down because i expected it to be scarier based on everything i had been seeing about it.
rating: 4/5 stars

Ward D by Freida McFadden
yes. oh my god yes. i could not put this book down. i have read some mixed reviews on this book after i finished it, saying how the different mental illnesses were not portrayed correctly, but i’ll be so honest with you right now, that is not what i was paying the most attention to. i loved the storyline and the flashbacks. i could kind of see where the twist was going, but i did not expect it to be to the level that it was. i love this book.

Never Lie by Freida McFadden
if you are going to read only one book by freida, make it this one. this was my favorite book of hers that i have read so far. it was kind of a slow burn at first, but when it picked up, oh my god. this story makes you think one thing is going to happen, and then it doesn’t and you get confused, and then something else happens. it is so crazy. so many twists, the ending was insane. you do not see what happens coming in the slightest. i can not recommend this book enough. read it.
rating: 5/5 stars

The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden
this book was good. it wasn’t my favorite of hers, but it was still good. it still had a twist at the end that you did not really see coming, but it wouldn’t be the first book of hers that i would recommend to someone who is getting into freida’s books.
rating: 3/5 stars

The Coworker by Freida McFadden
eh. it was ok. probably my least favorite book of her’s that i have read so far. the story was interesting to read, but it definitely wasn’t a nail-biter in my opinion.
rating: 2/5 stars

Sunrise On The Reaping by Suzanne Collins
MY HEART. suzanne, you did it again. this book ripped my heart out, stomped on it, set it on fire, glued it back together, and then threw it out of a 76 story building. oh my god. i already knew some about haymitch’s games because if there is one thing about me, i am an avid hunger games enthusiast. i thought i was prepared, dear god i was not. this book caused me physical pain in the best way possible. i love this book. it connected so many dots within the hunger games story and world. it makes you see things from the previous books in a different way. i cannot recommend this book enough, but be prepared to give yourself a headache from crying. especially the epilogue, that was just an extra bit of cruelness.
rating: 5/5 stars

The Locked Door by Freida McFadden
this was honestly an interesting book. not my favorite, but not my least favorite either. it was good. you kind of already knew a lot about the twist in terms of knowing it someone connected to the original case (i’m trying to not spoil it too much for those that haven’t read it yet), but the actual twist was cool. it wasn’t jaw-dropping or anything, but still not something you inherently saw coming.
rating: 3/5 stars

The Inmate by Freida McFadden
now this one, this one gave me whiplash. you originally think one thing, and then you think another, and then you smack yourself because you were right all along, but not completely? there was a lot that happened, but it was a really good book.
rating: 4/5 stars

The Teacher by Freida McFadden
the twist!! this book was really good. i, personally, did not see the very end coming. it literally makes your jaw drop on the last page with something you did NOT expect to happen. there were twists and turns and derailments galore. i would definitely recommend this book.
rating: 4/5 stars

The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose
YES. i had been seeing this book on booktok and on facebook so i finally read it. i am so glad i did. the twist at the end was crazy. it was such a good book, i’m so excited to read the sequel (once it gets to paperback, i am not a fan of hardback books). i would for sure recommend this book to read to anybody who is getting into psychological thrillers.
rating: 5/5 stars

American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
no. just no. i couldn’t even really get through it. i got to around page 120, and then i just skimmed through the rest because i could not stand it. there were intensely f*cked up scenes in the book, and the detailing was just all over the place. i mainly only skimmed through the rest of the book because my partner loves the movie and wanted me to watch it, but i’m the type of person who has to read the book first. will not be reading this book again.
rating: 1/5 stars

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse
slow burn. very slow burn. but the ending is worth it. you kind of could tell where it was headed, but it was still a really good book. i did not know this was the first book of a series, so i do want to get the rest of the series and read it.
rating: 4/5 stars

Home Is Where The Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose
okay so i am going to be completely honest, i am writing this in december and i read this book in may, i barely remember even reading it, let alone my exact thoughts on it. i obviously must have liked it seeing as how i rated it. i think the ending was kind of odd, but again.. not sure.
rating: 4/5 stars

Graveyard Shift by M. L. Rio
i struggled to get through this book, and it wasn’t even a full book. i quite literally forced myself to finish this, but yeah. do not recommend.
rating: 1/5 stars

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
okay this book i read in august and i am writing the review in december. if i remember correctly, i think it was kind of a slow burn type of book. the ending was something you could kind of see coming if you pay attention.
rating: 4/5 stars

All Good People Here by Ashley Flowers
i really enjoyed this book. the ending was something that i did not see coming originally, but i think the more into it you get, you can kind of start to see where it is heading.
rating: 5/5 stars

The Troop by Nick Cutter
meh. i had high expectations for this book because i had seen it all over tiktok saying how scary and horrifying it was.. i did not experience that. the closest i felt to scared was grossed out during certain scenes, but i was never scared. this book took me a while to read just because i wasn’t super interested in it.
rating: 2/5 stars

Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney
THIS BOOK WAS GREAT. my jaw physically dropped when the first twist happened. this one i had also seen on tiktok quite a bit, but this time the book lived up to the hype. i highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a lot of suspense.
rating: 5/5 stars

The Surrogate Mother by Freida McFadden
yes. freida has done it again. i’m not gonna lie, i had heard that her more recent work hasn’t been that great, so going into reading this i was a little nervous. but this book had the classic freida twist, did not see it coming. loved.
rating: 5/5 stars

The Perfect Divorce by Jeneva Rose
YES. i absolutely loved this. i loved the perfect marriage, so i was so so SO excited to read the sequel. i will say, it is only available (physically) in hardback and i am an avid hardback book hater, but my partner got it for me in my spooky basket because they knew if they bought it for me, i’d read it. and i did. and i loved it.
rating: 5/5 stars

The Tenant by Freida McFadden
classic freida twist. i was slightly skeptical at first, but i knew this was one of her more recent ones that a lot of people liked. it took me a minute to get into it, but i definitely did not see that twist coming and my jaw was on the FLOOR.
